Ladybird, Vassily Sigarev?s third play, premiered at the Royal Court Theater, London. A ?moral? play highlighting the fusion of the worst excesses of the West and the East, heartbreakingly sad, funny, tragic; a variation on a contemporary theme ? confidence tricks, desperation and exploitation. In a God and society forsaken spot, stands a derelict block of apartments, nicknamed ?Dead and Alive,? next to an old cemetery, which is being plundered for its stainless steel Soviet grave memorials. Inside one of the apartments we find the deprived and the depraved ? crushed by life, trying to crawl out of their living grave. Dima, nineteen and about to leave for Chechnya, lives here with his alcoholic father. Dima has invited some friends to send him on his way: Slavik, the skinny, desperate, ant and furniture nibbling junkie; Arkasha, the local wheeler-dealer; and the gullible, dreaming of riches, tart-with-the-heart, Lera, who has brought her silent, richer cousin Yul?ka along. As the night wears on, the true spirit of each character surfaces revealing dark and desperate actions of the human condition.
The cast and crew is quite stellar. Besides the playwright Sigarev (winner of London's Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright in 2002), the cast and crew includes: Yasen Peyankov (co-founder of European Repertory Theatre in Chicago, member of Steppenwolf in Chicago), Jeff Perry (co-founder of Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, TV's Grey's Anatomy), Sarah Utterback (TV's Grey's Anatomy), Patrick Mapel, York Griffith, and Jen Sydney.
