Passions a la Carmen makes its Boston debut at John Hancock Hall on Tuesday, March16th at 7:30pm. Choreographed by St. Petersburg State Ballet Theater Artistic Director Yuri Petukhov, this expressive ballet captures the spirit of the turbulent love triangle and bull-fighting culture of Bizet’s vivacious temptress Carmen. On Wednesday, March 17th at 7:30pm the troupe presents Masterworks En Pointe: An Evening of Dance Gems, a spectacular production inspired by seven artistic geniuses. An expression of ideas, images and cultures, each short ballet was conceived by acclaimed dancer and St. Petersburg Ballet State Theater Artistic Director, Yuri Petukhov or legendary Russian choreographer Leonid Jacobson in response to a masterpiece from a different genre. Jacobson, the late founder of St. Petersburg State Ballet Theatre, was an internationally acclaimed choreographer-improvisator who constantly searched for expressive means and forms. A uniquely gifted master of the ballet miniature, Mr. Jacobson is continuing to delight audiences all over the world.
Shostakovich’sWedding Cortège: choreographed by Leonid Jacobson in honor of Marc Chagall’s paintings (seen in ballet’s scenery) and the resilience of Jewish artists living in an anti-Semitic Russia. Conceived in 1970 and banned by the Russian government for four years, the piece has since made a triumphant return to venues in Russia and beyond.
Rodin: a ballet inspired by Auguste Rodin’s amorous sculptures, also choreographed by Jacobson and performed to music by Claude Debussy, Sergey Prokofiev & Alban Berg. Taking a cue from the legendary sculptor whose works were always infused with movement, Jacobson transforms pieces such as The Kiss and Eternal Spring into active, playful and poignant forms and scenarios. <!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--> <!--[endif]-->
Tchaikovsky’sItalian Capriccio: a dance interpretation of the composer’s tribute to Rome following a memorable holiday in The Eternal City. Choreographed by Yuri Petukhov, this lively ballet opens with an introductory bugle call (initially heard from the composer’s hotel) before transporting the audience to a city brimming with Italian folk melodies and urban fanfare.
Boléro − widely considered Maurice Ravel’s best-known work − recalls the artist’s industrial Basque heritage on the French-Spanish border. Originally conceived as a ballet in 1928, Bolero has since become a well-known orchestral work. Now, more than 80 years later, the St. Petersburg State Ballet Theatre has reprised this innovative masterpiece, offering audiences the rare opportunity to see it expressed in the genre Ravel so greatly admired.
